The Javelin missile is so sensitive it can lock onto a target even through smoke or at night, thanks to its thermal sensor. That’s why in the first months of the war, there were cases when Russian tank crews tried to hide behind smoke screens - and still got hit.

The Javelin’s infrared seeker is so sensitive that in some cases it has locked onto the heat of a helicopter’s engine - even though it was originally designed for tanks.

The Javelin missile has two attack modes - top attack for striking targets through the roof, and direct attack for engaging low-flying helicopters or fortified positions
